Front Street in Early FallFarmington, Iowa

Welcome to Farmington - one of the quaint Villages of Van Buren County, located in southeast Iowa.

The town sits on the banks of the Des Moines River, is the home of Indian Lake Park, and is also the location for the Shimek State Forest headquarters.  These outdoor recreational areas make Farmington an ideal base for many different kinds of activities.  Farmington also kicks off the summer each year with an annual Strawberry Festival, which draws vendors and visitors from many different locations.

Visitors to Farmington, and Van Buren County, are struck by the unique beauty of the area and the atmosphere of being set apart from the rush of the every day world.  Farmington is nestled in a peaceful valley at the southern edge of Van Buren County.  The Des Moines River borders one side of the town, while the rolling hills and steep ridges of Shimek Forest encircle the other sides.

The Des Moines River offers enjoyment for both canoeists and fishermen.  During low water levels, sand bars and islands are accessible from shore and delight adults and children, alike, with their treasures of clam shells, geodes, and interesting rocks.  Fishermen have access to a boat ramp to launch their boats in the Des Moines River on Front, at State Street, in Farmington.

4th Street in Early FallJust east of town lies Shimek State Forest.  The 9,000 acres of forest land contains miles of hiking, riding, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing trails, in addition to numerous access roads.  Public hunting is permitted, and sportsmen will find a wide range of wildlife, with deer, wild turkeys, and many species of small game plentiful.  Fishermen will also find that the four large ponds are well stocked with fish.  Primitive camping is available throughout the forest, as well.

Farmington is especially proud that it was one of the first cities in Iowa to celebrate its sesquicentennial.  In 1983, Farmington held a two-day celebration in conjunction with the Farmington Alumni Association in September of that year.  A time capsule was buried in the lawn in front of City Hall, which scheduled to be opened on July 4, 2033.  A monument marks the exact burial of the capsule.

For a quiet weekend, camping, hunting, fishing, or vacation, discover Farmington's natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and history, and its quaint charm.  Our hands are always holding the welcome sign for you.
